Using DNA To Stop Poaching

February 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

The BBC has published an article about a research student at Bangor University named Lindsay Peppin.

“The idea is to link up blood stains, on a poacher’s clothing for example, to a rhino carcass,” she said.

Peppin is working on animal forensics and genetic fingerprinting, similar to human DNA analysis, in conjunction with the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

She reports using the rhino to implement these techniques because it is such a “charismatic” creature. We couldn’t agree more.
